  • 10 ounces (284 grams) fresh strawberries (divided)
  • 3-4 tablespoons (44-50 grams) granulated sugar
  • zest from 1/2 lemon (optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon (7 milliliters) freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 2 cups (473 milliliters) cold milk


Instructions

  1. Hull and chop 6 ounces of strawberries in a bowl. Mash them until crushed, then mix in sugar along with optional lemon juice and zest.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a small pot and simmer over medium-low heat for 2-5 minutes until thickened into syrup.
  3. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla if desired, and let cool before refrigerating.
  4. Hull and finely dice the remaining strawberries.
  5. In two glasses, divide the cooled syrup, add diced strawberries, and pour in cold milk.
  6. Stir gently to combine and serve immediately.
