Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf Pasquier Sliced Brioche (17.6 ounces)
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups milk (2% or whole)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 2 cups assorted fresh berries
  • 3/4 cup sugar (for lemon butter sauce)
  • 6 tablespoons butter (for lemon butter sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons water (for lemon butter sauce)
  • 1 large egg (well beaten, for lemon butter sauce)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (for lemon butter sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. Cut the brioche into 1-inch cubes and spread them on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven until lightly golden, checking every five minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with melted butter until evenly coated.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and lemon zest until well mixed.
  5. Lightly grease your baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
  6. Layer half of the bread cubes in the dish followed by half of the berries; repeat with remaining bread and berries.
  7. Pour custard mixture over the layered bread and berries, pressing down gently to submerge.
  8. Bake uncovered for about 45-50 minutes; check at 40 minutes and cover with foil if browning too quickly.
  9. Allow cooling for at least 20 minutes before serving.
