With step-by-step instructions, you’ll master this classic French pastry and impress family and friends with your culinary skills. Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups cold whole milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for layering)
  • 16 chocolate batons
  • 1 tbsp milk (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Gradually add cold milk to form a sticky dough. Knead until smooth.
  2. Flatten cold unsalted butter between parchment paper into a rectangle and chill.
  3. Roll out the dough into a larger rectangle, place the chilled butter in the center, and fold the dough over to encase it.
  4. Roll out the dough again and fold into thirds like a letter. Repeat this process two more times.
  5. Cut the rolled-out dough into triangles, place a chocolate baton at the base of each triangle, and roll tightly from base to tip.
  6. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet to rise until doubled in size. Brush with milk before baking at 375°F (190°C) for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
